The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin is calling it a day. She's got one more album to be released and then that's it. It sounds like she's serious about it too. Although, even in retirement she'll do one-off performances...ala Grammy Performances, National Anthems and the like.
According to her Wikipedia page, Aretha recorded a total of 112 charted singles on Billboard, including 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 top ten pop singles, 100 R&B entries and twenty number-one R&B singles, becoming the most charted female artist in the chart's history.
In an interview with a Detroit news station, Aretha said of her final album, quote, "Several of the songs are going to be produced by Stevie [Wonder]. it's kind of multi-directional...we're not pigeonholed to any one thing." The album is supposed to be out sometime in September.
Aretha went on to say that she isn't COMPLETELY shutting things down, saying, quote, "This will be my last year. I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it. I'll still do some select things, one a month, for six months out of the year."
Enjoy retirement, Aretha! You've certainly earned it.
